This volcanic chalcedony mineral  is formed by calcified tree trunk shaped layers of fine uneven splintery quartz. Discovered and named between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, Agate is one of the most common materials used in the art of hard stone carving. Its hardness and ability to resist acids, makes the perfect material for mortars and pestles to crush and mix chemicals.

In medieval times, the wearing of Agate was said to bring God's favour and protection from all dangers in addition to cure insomnia and promote pleasant dreams.
