This volcanic chalcedony mineral is formed by calcified tree trunk like layers of fine uneven splintery quartz. Discovered and named between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, Agate is one of the most common materials used in the art of hardstone carving. Its hardness and ability to resist acids makes it the perfect material for mortars and pestles to crush and mix chemicals.
